Go therefore and make disciples of all nations
Matthew 28:19
The Bible provides a strong foundation for the concept of missions, highlighting the call to spread the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. One of the core passages is the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus instructs His disciples:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Additionally, Jesus emphasizes the importance of missions in Acts 1:8, where He tells His followers:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Throughout the Bible, from the calling of Abraham to the ministry of Paul, the theme of God reaching out to all nations is evident. God's heart for the lost and His desire for His name to be glorified among all peoples can be seen in both the Old and New Testaments. Therefore, missions are about joining in God's plan to redeem and restore the world through the message of Jesus Christ.
